Software Testing Services Cost in the USA: Rates, Pricing Models and Budgets
Software testing services in the USA are mostly billed by the hour. Published contractor surveys put US QA engineers at $40-$65 per hour for juniors and $90-$140 for seniors. The same survey puts Latin America and Eastern Europe at $35-$60 for seniors. Among the 12 companies in our ranking, Clutch shows hourly bands from under $25 to $50-$99. Their minimum projects run from $1,000 to $100,000. A monthly budget equals testing hours multiplied by the blended rate of the team.
All figures on this page come from public pages that anyone can open. Each table names its source and the date it was checked, 2026-09-26. Where a source does not publish a figure for a grade or region, the cell says "not published". No figure on this page is an estimate of ours.
QA outsourcing rates by location
The table below collects hourly rates for contracted QA staff. These are rates a client pays a contractor or an agency, not salaries. Each row keeps the grade split used by its source. The three sources define grades differently, so compare rows from the same source first.

remote.qa defines junior as 0-2 years, mid-level as 3-5 years and senior as 6 or more years. Second Talent uses 0-2, 3-6 and 6-10 years. Vervali labels its India figures as agency billing rates that include vendor overhead. Lemon.io states that its figures come from contract data for vetted developers on its platform. Mismo gives a separate figure of $30-$40 per hour for manual testers in Latin America. Every source in this table sells QA staffing or engineering talent. Treat the ranges as a starting point for negotiation, not as a quote.
How to read the regional gap
The senior band for US onshore QA starts at $90 per hour in the remote.qa guide. The senior bands for Latin America and Eastern Europe in the same guide end at $60. The senior India band from Second Talent ends at $42. For automation work, Lemon.io shows a US senior band of $57-$74 against $35-$45 for Brazil. Reasons to pay the onshore rate include time-zone overlap, US data residency and regulated projects that require US-based staff. The sourcing-model guide covers that choice in detail.
US wages for software QA analysts and testers
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish wages by seniority grade. It publishes wage percentiles for the occupation "Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers" (SOC 15-1253). These are employee wages before benefits, not contractor rates.
| Measure (May 2025, all US) | Hourly wage | Annual wage |
|---|---|---|
| 10th percentile | $29.54 | $61,440 |
| 25th percentile | $38.61 | $80,310 |
| Median | $50.14 | $104,300 |
| 75th percentile | $64.03 | $133,180 |
| 90th percentile | $80.29 | $167,010 |
| Mean | $53.60 | $111,490 |
Source: BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, occupation 15-1253, retrieved through the BLS public data API on 2026-09-26. BLS counts 186,740 people employed in this occupation in May 2025. A percentile is not a grade, so this table cannot be read as junior, mid-level and senior pay. BLS does not publish a separate wage line for test automation engineers.
Published rates of the 12 ranked companies
Each Clutch profile displays an hourly rate band and a minimum project size. The table lists those bands for the companies in the ranking, in rank order. A band on Clutch is a listed range, not a contract price.
| Company | Hourly rate band | Minimum project | Source (checked 2026-09-26) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScienceSoft | $50-$99 | $5,000+ | Clutch profile |
| QualityLogic | $25-$49 | $5,000+ | Clutch profile |
| QA Wolf | undisclosed | $5,000+ | Clutch profile |
| QASource | not specified | $100,000+ | Clutch profile |
| Mindful QA | $50-$99 | $1,000+ | Clutch profile |
| Abstracta | $50-$99 | $10,000-$49,999 | Clutch profile |
| TestingXperts | $50-$99 | $5,000+ | Clutch profile |
| iBeta Quality Assurance | $50-$99 | $1,000+ | Clutch profile |
| QA Mentor | under $25 | $1,000+ | Clutch profile |

| ImpactQA | $25-$49 | $10,000+ | Clutch profile |
| XBOSoft | $25-$49 | $1,000+ | Clutch profile |
Five of the 12 companies list $50-$99 per hour. Four list $25-$49. One lists under $25, and two give no band. The widest spread is in minimums: four companies accept projects from $1,000, while QASource lists $100,000. Pricing transparency is one of eight criteria in the methodology and carries a weight of 8.
What the vendor sites add
Some vendor sites give terms that Clutch does not show. Mindful QA's site sells testing by the hour with a 20-hour minimum and no long-term contract. iBeta states that its QA On-Demand service has no contractual minimums. QualityLogic states that no long-term contracts are required. Kualitatem's FAQ says it publishes no fixed hourly rate. The same FAQ gives a typical engagement length of 6 months to 5 years. QA Wolf's pricing page lists self-serve usage prices of 1 cent per AI credit and 15 cents per runner minute. Its managed coverage service is priced by quote only.
Published sample prices
ScienceSoft's pricing page is the only page among the 12 that lists sample project prices. It gives $5,000 for one-time performance testing of a mobile app or a non-complex web app. It gives $20,000 per month for continuous managed testing of 3-5 evolving apps. A QA process audit with improvement advice is listed at $24,000-$72,000 or more. A one-time penetration test of a client-facing app is listed at $5,000-$10,000. These are the vendor's own examples, and actual quotes depend on scope.
QA outsourcing pricing models
The engagement models listed by the ranked companies fall into five groups. Each group moves a different risk to a different party.
| Model | How you pay | Who carries scope risk | Listed by (examples from the ranking) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time and materials or staff augmentation | Hours worked times the hourly rate | Buyer | QA Mentor, Abstracta |
| Fixed price or project-based | One price for a defined scope | Vendor | iBeta Quality Assurance, XBOSoft |
| Dedicated team | Monthly fee per assigned engineer | Buyer | QASource, Kualitatem |
| On-demand hourly | Hours as needed, often with a minimum block | Buyer | Mindful QA, QualityLogic |
| Managed or outcome-based | Fee tied to coverage or deliverables | Shared | TestingXperts, ImpactQA |
QA Wolf sells managed coverage and a usage-based self-serve platform. The listings come from each company's engagement model pages or Clutch profile, checked 2026-09-26.
Fixed price vs time and materials QA testing
Fixed price suits a scope you can write down in full before work starts. Examples are a one-time regression pass, a release certification or a compliance pre-audit. The vendor adds a margin for uncertainty to a fixed quote. Any change to scope becomes a change request with a new price.
Time and materials suits products that ship every week or every sprint. You pay for hours actually worked, and the scope can change without a new contract. The risk is that hours grow without a cap. A monthly hour ceiling and a weekly timesheet review keep that risk in check.
A dedicated team is time and materials with fixed headcount. It is priced per engineer per month. It fits programs longer than a few months, where the same testers learn the product.
What factors influence the cost of software testing
The hourly rate is only one input. The total cost depends on how many hours the work takes and on the mix of grades in the team.
- Location of the testers. The rate tables above show senior bands from $25 in South Asia to $140 in the US.
- Grade mix. A team of one senior and three juniors costs less per hour than four seniors, but needs more review time.
- Manual or automated testing. Automation engineers bill above manual testers in every source that splits the two. Automation cuts the hours of each later regression cycle.
- Release frequency. A product that ships weekly needs regression every week, which multiplies hours.
- Platforms and devices. Each added browser, operating system or device model adds test runs.
- Regulated data. HIPAA or PCI DSS work adds evidence and documentation hours. It can also rule out offshore delivery.
- Minimum commitments. A $50,000 or $100,000 minimum project sets a floor on spend regardless of hours.
- Specialized testing. Performance, security and accessibility testing need separate tools and skills.
The how-to-choose guide shows how to weigh price against the other seven criteria.
A worked budget example
The example below multiplies published rate bands by a fixed number of hours. It is arithmetic on the tables above, not a vendor quote. It assumes two mid-level QA engineers at 160 hours each per month, or 320 hours.
| Team location (remote.qa mid-level band) | Hourly band | Monthly cost for 320 hours |
|---|---|---|
| US onshore | $65-$100 | $20,800-$32,000 |
| Nearshore Latin America | $25-$45 | $8,000-$14,400 |
| Eastern Europe | $22-$40 | $7,040-$12,800 |
| Offshore South and Southeast Asia | $15-$35 | $4,800-$11,200 |
The offshore row does not include the added hours of handoffs across time zones. The US row does not include travel or on-site work. Ask each vendor to quote the same 320-hour scope, so the quotes are comparable.
Frequently asked questions
How much does software testing cost?
Most software testing services are billed per hour, so cost equals hours times rate. Published contractor surveys from 2026 put US QA engineers at $40-$140 per hour, depending on grade. The same surveys put India at $14-$42 per hour. Among the 12 ranked US companies, Clutch bands range from under $25 to $50-$99 per hour. Minimum projects start at $1,000 for four of them.
How much does it cost to outsource software testing?
Outsourced testing costs the vendor's hourly rate times the hours in scope, subject to any minimum project size. Two mid-level testers working 320 hours a month cost $8,000-$14,400 at the Latin American band in the remote.qa guide. The same hours cost $20,800-$32,000 at the US band. Minimums among the ranked companies run from $1,000 to $100,000.
What is the QA outsourcing hourly rate in the USA?
The remote.qa guide of July 2026 gives $40-$65 per hour for junior US QA engineers. It gives $65-$100 for mid-level and $90-$140 for senior engineers. Lemon.io lists $57-$74 per hour for senior US automation QA engineers. For comparison, BLS reports a median employee wage of $50.14 per hour for software QA analysts and testers in May 2025.
Is outsourcing software testing cheaper than hiring in-house?
It depends on location and on how many hours you need. A US employee at the BLS median earns $104,300 a year before benefits, recruiting and tools. A US contractor at the remote.qa mid-level band costs more per hour than that wage. The senior bands for Latin America and Eastern Europe start at $35 per hour, below the US median wage. Outsourcing also lets you pay only for the months you test.
How much does test automation cost?
Automation cost is mostly the hours of automation engineers to build and maintain the test suite. Lemon.io lists mid-level automation QA engineers at $42-$51 per hour in the US and $30-$40 in Brazil. Vervali lists senior automation engineers in India at $35-$50 per hour. QA Wolf sells a usage-based option at 15 cents per runner minute. Framework build hours depend on the size of the application.
How much does performance testing cost?
One ranked company publishes a sample price of $5,000 for a one-time performance test of a mobile app or non-complex web app. That figure is on the pricing page cited in the sample prices section above. Larger systems need more scripted user flows, more load scenarios and more analysis hours. Ask for a quote that lists the scenarios, peak load and number of test runs.
How much does accessibility testing cost?
None of the 12 ranked companies publishes an accessibility testing price on the pages checked. Cost follows the usual formula of hours times rate. Hours grow with the number of page templates, the WCAG level you target and the screen readers and browsers in scope. Ask vendors to price per template and to name the assistive technologies they test with.
How do I estimate my QA outsourcing budget?
Count the test hours you need each month, including regression for every release. Pick a region and grade mix, then take its band from the rate table above. Multiply hours by the blended rate. Check that the result clears the vendor's minimum project size. Then ask two or three vendors from the ranking to quote the same scope.
Where do the rate figures on this page come from?
US wages come from BLS data for occupation 15-1253, May 2025. Regional contractor rates come from rate guides published in 2026 by remote.qa, Lemon.io, Mismo, Second Talent and Vervali.
